New Zealand potato cyst nematode

Globodera zelandica

Description

Systematic position. The New Zealand potato cyst nematode (Globodera zelandica) is classified within the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, order Tylenchida, and family Heteroderidae. It is a highly specialized sedentary endoparasite that is strictly regulated as a quarantine pest in many jurisdictions due to its potential to cause severe yield losses.

Host plants. This species primarily infests plants within the Solanaceae family. Potato (Solanum tuberosum) is the most significant economic host. The nematode's narrow host range also includes various wild Solanum species, which can act as reservoirs for the pest when the main crop is not present.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle starts when second-stage larvae emerge from cysts in response to chemical signals from host roots. Once inside the roots, they establish a permanent feeding site (syncytium). Adult females become sessile, swell up, and eventually die, their cuticle hardening into a protective brown cyst that contains hundreds of eggs, enabling the population to persist in the soil for years.

Damage and severity. Symptoms of infection appear in the field as patches of stunted, chlorotic plants that show early senescence. Below ground, the root system becomes heavily branched and restricted, leading to a significant reduction in tuber size and total yield. In heavily infested soils, the commercial viability of potato production is severely compromised.

Management strategies. Effective management is centred on prevention and long-term soil management. Key strategies include:

  • Strict adherence to long-term crop rotation cycles.
  • The use of certified nematode-free seed potatoes.
  • Integration of resistant potato cultivars in the rotation plan.
  • Routine soil testing to monitor cyst density before planting.
  • Application of specialized nematicides where permitted by local regulations.
