The Glossonotus treehopper (genus Glossonotus) is a member of the Membracidae family, belonging to the order Hemiptera. These insects are easily recognized by their highly modified pronotum, which often extends into specialized shapes that provide camouflage against branches and bark. In agricultural contexts, they are recognized as significant pests of woody perennials.

These insects primarily target a wide range of fruit and ornamental trees, with a marked preference for apple trees, pears, and oak species. Both nymphs and adults feed on the plant sap of young shoots, which directly interferes with the tree's vascular transport system and negatively impacts its overall vigor and growth rate.

The life cycle of the Glossonotus follows a standard hemipteran pattern, with the species overwintering in the egg stage. Females utilize a specialized ovipositor to insert eggs into the bark of young twigs, creating small, visible slits in the plant tissue. Upon hatching in the spring, the nymphs begin feeding on sap, progressing through several molting stages until they reach maturity.

Damage is characterized by mechanical wounds caused by the oviposition process, which can lead to bark necrosis and serve as entry points for secondary bacterial or fungal infections. Furthermore, intense sap feeding causes shoots to become deformed or stunted. In high-density infestations, this leads to chlorosis, leaf drop, and decreased productivity in young orchard plantings.

Control measures necessitate an integrated approach focusing on both physical and chemical interventions. Regular pruning and disposal of infested twigs are critical to reducing the localized population density.
