Systematic position: The slender-horned flour beetle (Gnatocerus maxillosus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Tenebrionidae. It is recognized globally as a significant pest of stored products, primarily thriving in tropical climates and heated facilities in temperate zones.

Affected commodities: This beetle primarily attacks cereal products, including flour, bran, cracked grains, and various types of meal. It is frequently found in processed food storages, warehouses holding wheat, maize, rice, and even dry botanical materials such as oilseeds, nuts, and dried fruits.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Eggs are laid in the food substrate, followed by several larval stages that are the most destructive. The adult beetles are also capable of feeding on the stored products. Development speed is significantly accelerated by high temperatures and high moisture levels in the storage environment.

Damage and economic impact: The primary damage is caused by the larval and adult stages eating the grain, which lowers the weight and quality of the stored produce. Furthermore, the beetle contaminates the products with excrement, larval skins, and dead insects, which promotes the growth of secondary mold and contributes to the overheating of grain bulks.

Control measures: Management of Gnatocerus maxillosus relies on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies to ensure long-term grain safety:

• Maintaining low moisture content in grain storage to discourage beetle proliferation.
• Sanitation practices, including the removal of residual food materials and cleaning of equipment.
