Description
The Siberian grasshopper (Gomphocerus sibiricus) is a member of the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. It is a well-known agricultural pest in Eurasia, particularly in steppe and forest-steppe ecosystems, capable of reaching high population densities that threaten regional food security.
This species is highly polyphagous but shows a strong preference for cereal crops such as wheat, barley, oats, and rye. It also poses a significant threat to permanent pastures and meadow grasses, causing massive losses in biomass and forage availability for livestock.
The life cycle of this grasshopper includes the egg stage, which serves as the overwintering phase within the soil, followed by five nymphal stages (instars) before reaching adulthood. The emergence of nymphs is tightly synchronized with rising spring temperatures, leading to rapid development in favourable climate conditions.
Damage caused by the Siberian grasshopper is characterized by extensive defoliation, where insects consume leaves, stems, and developing grain heads. High density outbreaks can result in complete crop failure within a short time, as the insects move through fields in a destructive feeding pattern.
Effective control measures require an integrated pest management strategy. Cultural methods, such as deep autumn plowing to expose egg pods to freezing temperatures, are fundamental. When thresholds are exceeded, chemical control via insecticide spraying remains the most reliable method to mitigate large-scale damage to agricultural production.
