The genus Gomphus, commonly known as clubtail dragonflies, belongs to the order Odonata and the family Gomphidae. While adult dragonflies are beneficial predators that reduce populations of flying insects, their aquatic larvae, or naiads, can occasionally pose challenges in specialized agricultural systems such as rice paddies or hydroponic installations.
Taxonomically, these insects are characterized by their separated eyes and specific abdominal structures. Their life cycle is remarkably long, with the larval stage living submerged in sediment for several years. This extended development period makes them highly dependent on the stability of the aquatic environment and the composition of the bottom substrate.
