Systematic position: The Common clubtail (Gomphus vulgatissimus) belongs to the order Odonata, family Gomphidae. As a member of the dragonfly family, this species is widely distributed in temperate zones. While adults are aerial predators that contribute to ecological balance, their larval stages possess specific behavioral characteristics that categorize them as potential pests in managed aquatic environments.

Biology and development cycle: The life cycle is essentially aquatic. Females deposit eggs into running water, where the larvae (nymphs) hatch and remain submerged for several years. They are sedentary predators that bury themselves in the substrate, such as sand or silt, waiting for prey to pass by. Upon reaching maturity, they emerge from the water to undergo metamorphosis into adults, which are then capable of long-distance flight.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: The harmful impact of this species is largely confined to aquaculture and fish farming. The larvae are voracious predators and can consume fry or small fingerlings, significantly reducing yields in fish ponds.
