Gonioctena rubripennis is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Chrysomelidae family. Recognized as a significant plant pest, this beetle is known for its distinct red-winged appearance and its specialized feeding habits. It primarily interacts with woody vegetation, often causing localized outbreaks that demand agricultural attention.

The beetle primarily targets plants within the Salicaceae family, specifically various species of willows and poplars. In commercial willow production systems, Gonioctena rubripennis can significantly reduce plant vigor by damaging the foliage, which is essential for biomass accumulation and overall plant health during the growing season.

The life cycle of this beetle involves complete metamorphosis including egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The adult beetles typically overwinter in soil or leaf litter. Upon emerging in the spring, they begin feeding on budding leaves. The females lay eggs, and the resulting larvae feed gregariously, causing rapid depletion of leaf tissue as they develop through several instars.

The damage caused by this insect is primarily characterized by skeletonization and defoliation of the leaves. Adults produce irregular holes, while larvae often feed on the underside of the leaves, consuming the parenchyma and leaving the venation intact. In cases of high infestation, severe defoliation occurs, which weakens the plant's defense mechanisms and slows down physiological growth.
