Description

The genus Gonodonta represents a group of moths within the family Erebidae. These insects are infamous as fruit-piercing moths, possessing a strong, sclerotized proboscis capable of penetrating the tough epidermis of various fruits to feed on the nutrient-rich juices inside.

These pests primarily target citrus orchards, but their host range also includes papayas, tomatoes, and other succulent fruits. They are considered significant pests in regions where they disrupt agricultural production by damaging crops that are intended for both local consumption and export markets.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis typical of Lepidoptera: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Larvae usually feed on foliage, sometimes on specific host plants, while the adults are nocturnal and highly mobile, allowing them to migrate between orchards and cause sudden, widespread damage overnight.

The damage caused by Gonodonta is twofold: mechanical injury from the piercing proboscis and subsequent pathological damage. Once the skin is breached, secondary pathogens, including fungi and bacteria, quickly invade the fruit, leading to rapid fermentation, rot, and total loss of the produce.

  • Monitor populations using light traps.
  • Remove and destroy fallen, damaged fruit to break the life cycle.
  • Apply targeted insecticides during peak adult flight periods.
  • Maintain orchard hygiene to minimize alternative host plants.
  • Use physical barriers like fruit bagging in small-scale farming.

Effective control requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Because these moths are strong flyers and nocturnal, chemical control is often difficult to time, making cultural practices and constant monitoring the most sustainable ways to mitigate their impact on high-value fruit yields.
