Description
Systematic position. The maple leaf miner moth, known scientifically as Gracillaria negundella, belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gracillariidae. These small moths are significant pests in urban landscapes and forests, specifically targeting members of the Acer genus, particularly the boxelder maple.
Host plants and damage. The primary host is Acer negundo. The larvae initially act as leaf miners, creating small blotch mines within the leaf tissue. As they mature, they advance to roll the leaf edges or tips into distinctive tubes or cones. This activity causes the leaves to skeletonize, wither, and eventually drop prematurely.
Biology and lifecycle. The species typically undergoes multiple generations during a single growing season. The winter is usually spent in the pupal stage, hidden within leaf litter or bark crevices. Adult moths are small, nocturnal insects with narrow, fringed wings, which allow them to remain inconspicuous during the day.
Pest significance. High populations of Gracillaria negundella can cause severe defoliation of host trees. This loss of photosynthetic surface area weakens the trees, making them more susceptible to secondary pathogens, drought, and winter damage. In ornamental settings, the aesthetic value of the trees is drastically reduced due to the widespread leaf rolling and browning.
