Haematosiphon

Haematosiphon is a genus of specialized ectoparasites belonging to the family Reduviidae (assassin bugs), which primarily parasitize domestic poultry. Although they are not considered pests of field crops, their presence in farm buildings causes significant economic losses in the poultry sector by affecting livestock health and productivity.

Systematically, this genus belongs to the order Hemiptera. Unlike many herbivorous bugs, Haematosiphon species are obligate hematophages. They are nocturnal and secretive, hiding in dark crevices during the day, which makes detecting their presence and implementing timely control measures quite challenging.

The biology of these pests is closely linked to the poultry environment. Females deposit eggs in wall cracks, bedding, or nesting boxes. The larvae go through several developmental stages, each requiring a blood meal from the host to progress. Under favorable temperature and humidity conditions, the life cycle proceeds rapidly, allowing for quick population build-ups.

The damage caused is primarily manifested through severe irritation and restlessness in poultry, leading to reduced growth rates and egg production. Bites can cause dermatitis, hypersensitivity reactions, and secondary anemia. In severe infestations, juvenile birds are particularly at risk, often succumbing to chronic blood loss and anemia.

Protection and control measures rely heavily on rigorous sanitary practices and structural maintenance. The following methods are recommended:

• Regular disinfection of poultry houses using appropriate insecticides.
• Sealing cracks and crevices in building structures to eliminate egg-laying sites.
• Use of high-quality bedding materials and consistent litter management.
• Thermal treatment of equipment and surfaces using steam cleaners.
