Mexican chicken bug

Haematosiphon inodorus, commonly known as the Mexican chicken bug, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cimicidae. This species is a specialized ectoparasite that feeds primarily on the blood of warm-blooded hosts, focusing its activity on domestic poultry such as chickens and turkeys.

The biology of this pest is closely linked to nesting sites. Unlike many other parasites, this bug is primarily nocturnal, spending its daylight hours hiding in wall cracks, poultry house crevices, litter, or structural gaps. It exhibits remarkable resilience and can survive for extended periods without a blood meal, waiting for a suitable host to return.

The insect's life cycle includes the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Females deposit their eggs in hidden crevices, making them extremely difficult to detect during standard cleaning procedures. Population development is temperature-dependent; within the warm environments of poultry houses, the life cycle accelerates, often leading to rapid population explosions.

The pest causes significant economic losses for poultry operations. Bites from these bugs induce severe irritation, itching, and restlessness in birds, which results in decreased appetite and overall productivity. In severe cases, heavy infestations lead to anemia in young birds, weakened immune systems, and mortality, severely impacting farm profitability.

Effective management requires a comprehensive approach, as standard insecticides often fail to penetrate the deep hiding spots of the bugs. Core control strategies include:
