Description

Systematic position. Halictophagus bipunctatus belongs to the order Strepsiptera and the family Halictophagidae. These insects are highly specialized endoparasites, known for their extreme sexual dimorphism and cryptic life cycles, which often make them a challenging subject for integrated pest management in agricultural fields.

Crops and economic impact. This species is primarily noted for its presence in rice crops. The pest affects the plant's overall vigor by disrupting metabolic functions and nutrient flow. Significant infestations lead to stunted growth, reduced biomass, and lower crop yields, as the host plant is forced to support the parasite’s development throughout the growing season.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves hypermetamorphosis, which is characteristic of the order Strepsiptera. Females typically remain within the host organism throughout their entire lifespan, while males emerge as free-living adults. The mobile first-instar larvae, often called triungulins, are responsible for seeking out and penetrating the soft tissues of the host plant.

Character of damage. Damage is caused by the larval stages feeding on the plant's vascular tissues. This feeding process creates localized stress, which can lead to necrosis, discoloration, and structural deformities within the plant tissue. In severe cases, the parasitic burden interferes with the plant’s ability to allocate resources for grain development.

Control measures. Due to the parasitic lifestyle of the pest, chemical control is often difficult as the insects are protected within the plant body. Effective strategies include:

  • Implementing crop rotation to prevent population buildup.
  • Eliminating wild host grasses that harbor the pest.
  • Applying systemic insecticides during periods when first-instar larvae are active and searching for hosts.
