The genus Haliotis, commonly referred to as abalone, belongs to the phylum Mollusca and the family Haliotidae. It is essential to clarify that Haliotis is not a plant pest in the agricultural sense. These organisms are exclusively marine gastropods that live in saltwater environments, making them biologically incompatible with terrestrial agricultural landscapes.

The biology of the Haliotis revolves around marine ecosystems. They go through a larval stage in the water column before settling on hard substrates such as rocks. Their life cycle is strictly dependent on salinity, water temperature, and the availability of specific marine algae, which makes their presence in gardens, greenhouses, or crop fields physically impossible.
