Description
The Green ormer (Haliotis tuberculata) is a marine gastropod mollusk belonging to the order Lepetellida and the family Haliotidae. Often referred to as European abalone, it is native to the coastal waters of the Northeast Atlantic and the Mediterranean. It is critical to distinguish this organism from terrestrial agricultural pests, as its lifecycle is entirely aquatic.
In the context of aquaculture, this mollusk is viewed as a commercial species rather than a traditional agricultural pest. It feeds on macroalgae, which are vital components of marine ecosystems. Damage to commercial seaweed crops can only occur in intensive aquaculture facilities where uncontrolled populations of ormers may overgraze the seaweed stocks provided for harvest.
The life cycle begins with the release of gametes into the water column, leading to the development of free-swimming veliger larvae. After a period of dispersal, the larvae settle on hard substrates and undergo metamorphosis into juvenile abalone. The growth rate is largely dictated by water temperature, light availability, and the nutritional value of the available algae.
The primary concern for marine farmers is the consumption rate of algae beds. Haliotis tuberculata uses its radula to scrape plant tissue, which can be highly efficient. If the population density is not managed, these mollusks can strip a specific area of seaweed cover, potentially affecting the overall productivity of the marine farm.
Protection and management measures involve maintaining an optimal stocking density within the farming area. By providing supplemental feed or rotating harvesting areas, farmers can mitigate the impact of intense grazing. Consistent monitoring of algal regrowth rates ensures that the population of mollusks remains in balance with their food source.
