Pale tiger moth

The Pale tiger moth (Halysidota tessellaris) is a species of moth in the family Erebidae and the subfamily Arctiinae. It is widely recognized for its adult stage, which features translucent wings with a distinctive checkered or tessellated pattern, making it a common nocturnal visitor in North American forests and gardens.

This insect is a generalist feeder known as a polyphage, meaning it consumes the foliage of a wide variety of host plants. Preferred hosts include deciduous trees such as maple, linden, birch, oak, walnut, and various fruit-bearing trees. Due to this broad host range, it can cause localized outbreaks in urban landscapes and agricultural settings.

The life cycle undergoes complete metamorphosis, consisting of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. The caterpillars are arguably the most notable stage, characterized by dense tufts of yellow, gray, or white hairs. These hairs, often referred to as urticating hairs, serve as a defense mechanism to deter predators by causing skin irritation upon contact.

Damage caused by this pest is primarily defoliation. As gregarious feeders in early instars, large groups of caterpillars can strip leaves from branches quickly. While mature trees can usually tolerate moderate defoliation, repeated infestations over several seasons can weaken the tree's overall vigor, stunted growth, and increase susceptibility to secondary diseases or drought stress.

Effective management requires a timely response strategy. Key approaches include:

• Manual removal of egg masses or young colonies in smaller garden trees;
• Application of biological insecticides like Bacillus thuringiensis when larvae are young;
• Using systemic or contact insecticides for heavy infestations in larger stands;
• Encouraging natural bird populations and parasitic wasps that predate on caterpillars.
