Description
The Blue pear curculio (Haplorhynchites caeruleus) is a pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Rhynchitidae. It is recognized as a significant threat in orchard environments, causing damage to various fruit-bearing trees throughout the growing season.
The pest primarily targets pear trees but is also known to infest apple, plum, and other related species. By feeding on the internal tissues of developing buds, young shoots, and fruits, the beetle can compromise the physiological health of the plant and reduce overall yields.
The life cycle begins with the overwintering of adults and larvae within the soil. As temperatures rise in early spring, adults emerge to feed on developing vegetative parts. The female utilizes its snout to create punctures and incisions in stems and fruit stalks, laying eggs that subsequently develop within the plant tissue, leading to structural failure of the plant parts.
