Systematic position and description: The genus Haptoncus belongs to the family Nitidulidae, commonly known as sap beetles, within the order Coleoptera. These are small beetles, typically ranging from 2 to 3 millimeters in length. They possess a characteristic oval and slightly flattened body shape, with colors varying from light yellowish-brown to dark brown, which provides effective camouflage on host plants and fruit surfaces.
Crops affected: Haptoncus species are polyphagous pests, capable of attacking a wide variety of horticultural and agricultural crops. They are particularly attracted to fruit-bearing plants such as strawberries, tomatoes, and various tropical crops like pineapples or papayas.
