Systematic position: The small grain beetle (Harpalus distinguendus) belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Carabidae. While the majority of carabid species are considered beneficial predators, this specific beetle is known for its phytophagous habits, which can cause economic losses in agricultural fields.
Affected crops: This pest primarily targets cereal crops, including wheat, barley, and rye. It also affects millet and sunflower fields. The beetle is particularly attracted to the soft grains during the milking and dough stages, causing damage that reduces both the volume and quality of the harvest.
