Strawberry seed beetle

Systematic position: The strawberry seed beetle, Harpalus rufipes, belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Carabidae. While many carabid beetles are beneficial predators, this particular species is a notorious pest due to its dietary preference for seeds and fruits, causing economic losses in various crop systems.

Biology and life cycle: Adult beetles typically measure 12–16 mm in length and are distinguished by their black bodies and reddish-orange legs and antennae. They overwinter as adults in the soil or under organic debris. Emergence occurs in the spring, followed by a feeding phase and egg-laying in the soil. The life cycle is univoltine, but the extended activity period of adults throughout the summer necessitates prolonged monitoring.

Host crops: This pest has a diverse host range, making it a threat to both field crops and horticultural systems. It primarily attacks cereal crops like wheat, barley, and rye, feeding on the developing grains. Furthermore, it is a significant nuisance in strawberry production, where it directly targets the ripening fruit, causing substantial damage to the harvest.

Damage and pest status: The beetles are nocturnal, spending their days in soil crevices or under leaf litter. On cereals, they chew holes in the grains, leading to reduced yields and quality. In strawberry cultivation, they feed on the achenes (seeds) and the surrounding fruit tissue. This damage not only ruins the berries' aesthetic appeal but also provides entry points for secondary fungal pathogens, leading to fruit rot.

Control measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Harpalus rufipes populations.

• Deep autumn plowing to disrupt overwintering sites.
• Maintaining field sanitation by removing weeds and crop debris.
• Targeted insecticide applications in the evening when beetles are most active.
• Using physical barriers or trapping methods in high-value berry crops.
