The Harpalus turmalinus species is a member of the Carabidae family, belonging to the order Coleoptera. Unlike many other ground beetles that are predatory, this specific species is known for its phytophagous habits, causing direct damage to agricultural crops. As a specialized pest, it requires careful monitoring to prevent significant yield losses in cereal fields.

The pest primarily targets cereal crops, including winter wheat, barley, rye, and oats. The most significant damage occurs during the seedling stage and germination. Both larvae and adults feed on the young tissues of the plants, which often results in reduced plant density, uneven emergence, and potential total crop failure in heavily infested areas.
