These microscopic organisms, commonly referred to as spiral nematodes, are widely distributed throughout global agricultural regions where they thrive in various soil types, particularly those with consistent moisture.

The host range of Helicotylenchus digonicus is extensive, encompassing various field crops, vegetables, and ornamental plants. It acts as an ectoparasite, although it often partially embeds itself within the root cortical tissue to sustain its feeding process, which significantly impacts the health of the plant's root system.

The life cycle involves eggs, multiple juvenile stages, and adults, all occurring within the soil or in the immediate rhizosphere. The nematode uses its specialized mouthpart, the stylet, to penetrate root cells and extract nutrients.
