Description
Helicotylenchus dihystera is a notorious species of plant-parasitic nematode within the order Tylenchida and the family Hoplolaimidae. Commonly known as the spiral nematode, it is a migratory ectoparasite that can also occasionally exhibit endoparasitic behavior within the roots of its host plants. Its distinct spiral shape when immobilized is the key morphological feature.
This nematode possesses a very broad host range, damaging economically important crops such as vegetables, grains, legumes, and perennial tree crops. It is widely distributed across tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions. Its ability to survive in a variety of soil textures makes it a significant challenge for farmers worldwide.
The life cycle of Helicotylenchus dihystera is characterized by egg stages followed by four larval instars, with the adult stage being reached through consecutive molts. The population dynamics are highly correlated with soil moisture and the presence of suitable root systems. As a parthenogenetic species, it can build up large populations quite rapidly in favorable conditions.
The damage caused is primarily attributed to the feeding of the nematode on root cells. By puncturing root tissues with its stylet, the pest causes cellular destruction, leading to chlorosis, stunted growth, and a reduction in the overall root mass. Heavily infested plants show weakened root systems, which significantly diminishes the crop's ability to uptake water and nutrients.
