Spiral nematode

Helicotylenchus erythrinae is a plant-parasitic nematode species belonging to the family Hoplolaimidae, order Tylenchida. It is widely recognized as a significant soil-borne pest that feeds on the roots of diverse plant species, leading to severe agricultural losses in tropical and temperate regions.

This nematode has a very broad host range, infecting critical crops such as bananas, coffee, pineapple, citrus, and various vegetables. Its ability to survive on both economic crops and weed species makes it a persistent threat in agricultural fields where it can establish long-term populations.

The biological cycle of Helicotylenchus erythrinae consists of the egg, four juvenile stages, and the adult phase. It is a migratory endoparasite and ectoparasite, meaning it can partially penetrate root tissues or feed externally. The reproduction is predominantly parthenogenetic, allowing populations to surge rapidly under favorable temperature and moisture conditions.

The damage caused by these nematodes is primarily visible through the necrosis of root tissues and the destruction of root cortical cells. Infected plants often show stunted development, chlorosis, and general unthriftiness. In severe cases, the damaged root system is unable to support the plant, leading to significant yield reduction and increased susceptibility to secondary soil-borne pathogens.

Management strategies for controlling Helicotylenchus erythrinae rely on integrated pest management (IPM) practices:
