Spiral nematode

Helicotylenchus exallus

Description

Taxonomic position. Helicotylenchus exallus belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, order Rhabditida, and family Hoplolaimidae. It is a group of microscopic soil-borne pathogens commonly known as spiral nematodes due to their characteristic shape when dead or inactive.

Host crops. This pest has a wide host range, attacking a variety of agricultural and horticultural plants. Major crops affected include cereals, legumes, various vegetable species, and fruit trees. By feeding on the roots, these nematodes weaken the plant's overall health and physiological development.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Helicotylenchus exallus consists of an egg stage, four larval molting stages, and the adult stage. The nematodes typically migrate through the soil to find suitable root sites. They use their stylets to puncture plant cells, extracting nutrients, which allows them to complete their life cycle within the rhizosphere.

Damage and economic significance. Infestations result in stunted plant growth, yellowing (chlorosis), and reduced yields. Root systems display lesions, necrosis, and general decay, impairing water and nutrient uptake. In high-density populations, these nematodes can cause significant economic losses across both large-scale farming and smaller horticultural operations.

Control measures. Managing spiral nematodes requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy to minimize soil population levels:

  • Implementation of effective crop rotation schedules to break the nematode life cycle.
  • Utilization of nematode-resistant or tolerant crop varieties.
  • Organic soil amendments to promote natural nematode-suppressive soil microbes.
  • Application of certified nematicides where infestation thresholds are exceeded.
  • Sanitization of farming equipment to prevent the mechanical transfer of contaminated soil.
