Description
Systematic position. Helicotylenchus microcephalus is a member of the phylum Nematoda, order Tylenchida, and family Hoplolaimidae. These microscopic organisms are recognized as obligate plant parasites that predominantly inhabit the rhizosphere, interacting directly with the root systems of various host plants.
Host range. This nematode species exhibits a wide host range, posing a threat to numerous agricultural and horticultural crops. Major targets include cereal crops, potatoes, tomatoes, various berry plantations, and turf grasses. The pest can persist in the soil for long periods, making it a challenging threat in diverse cropping systems.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Helicotylenchus microcephalus consists of an egg stage, four larval stages, and an adult stage. As semi-endoparasites, they feed by puncturing root cells with a specialized stylet and extracting cellular contents. Their development is closely linked to soil moisture levels and temperature, with optimal conditions leading to rapid population explosions.
