Description
Helicotylenchus minzi is a member of the Hoplolaimidae family within the order Tylenchida. Known as a spiral nematode, it acts as an obligate plant parasite. These microscopic roundworms are widely distributed in various soil types, where they feed on root tissues and negatively impact plant health.
This pest affects a broad range of hosts, including cereals, vegetable crops, ornamentals, and fruit plants. It is particularly problematic in intensive farming systems, where favorable soil moisture and continuous cropping allow populations to reach damaging levels, resulting in significant yield losses.
The life cycle of this nematode involves an egg stage, several juvenile stages, and the adult stage. The larvae and adults can move through the soil profile to locate new roots. They utilize their specialized feeding apparatus, known as a stylet, to penetrate root cells and extract nutrients, which weakens the plant.
Damage symptoms often include stunted growth, chlorosis, and wilting, especially under stress conditions. The destruction of root hair cells reduces the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients effectively, leading to stunted root development and an increased susceptibility to secondary infections by soil-borne fungi.
