Spiral nematode

Systematic position: Helicotylenchus multicinctus is a microscopic roundworm classified within the phylum Nematoda, order Tylenchida, and family Hoplolaimidae. It is a highly specialized plant-parasitic nematode that lives in the soil and migrates to plant roots to feed.

Host crops: This nematode is widely recognized as a major pest of banana and plantain (Musa spp.) crops globally. However, it is polyphagous and has a broad host range, impacting other tropical and subtropical crops such as citrus, pineapples, coffee, sugarcane, and various rice varieties, causing significant agricultural challenges.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of an egg stage, four larval stages, and the adult stage. The nematode thrives in moist, well-aerated soils. It reproduces sexually, and under favorable temperature conditions, the population can increase rapidly, allowing the pest to maintain high densities in the rhizosphere of susceptible plants throughout the year.

Nature of damage and economic impact: The nematode uses a specialized mouthpart called a stylet to penetrate root cells. Feeding activity causes localized necrosis and lesions on the root surface. This root tissue decay impairs the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients, resulting in stunted growth, chlorosis, reduced fruit yield, and increased susceptibility to uprooting during high wind conditions.

Control measures: Management strategies emphasize the use of clean, nematode-free planting material to prevent spread. Cultural practices, including crop rotation with non-host plants and the application of organic amendments, are effective.
