Spiral nematode

Systematic position. Helicotylenchus vulgaris belongs to the order Tylenchida and the family Hoplolaimidae. These microscopic roundworms are widely distributed across various soil types and climates, acting as specialized parasites on the root systems of numerous vascular plants.

Host plants. This species is a generalist (polyphagous) parasite. It attacks a broad range of agricultural crops, including cereals, vegetables, small fruits, and various ornamental plants. Both field-grown crops and greenhouse plantings are susceptible to infestation by this nematode.

Biology and lifecycle. The spiral nematode is considered a semi-endoparasite or ectoparasite capable of partially embedding itself into root tissues. Its lifecycle comprises the egg, four larval stages, and the adult stage. The nematodes thrive in the rhizosphere, using their robust stylets to pierce plant cells and extract nutrients from the epidermal and cortical layers of the roots.

Symptoms and damage. Infestation results in localized tissue destruction, including necrosis, root lesions, and severe stunting. These physical wounds serve as entry points for secondary fungal and bacterial pathogens, which typically lead to root rot. Consequently, infected plants exhibit yellowing, weakened vigor, stunted growth, and significantly reduced agricultural output.

Integrated pest management strategies include:

• Ensuring the use of certified, nematode-free planting material.
• Implementation of crop rotation cycles that limit the buildup of nematode populations.
• Stringent weed control, as many weeds act as alternative hosts for the parasite.
• Application of soil fumigants or chemical nematicides when economic injury levels are exceeded.
• Improving soil health through organic amendments to encourage plant vigor and resistance.
