Steppe geometer

Systematic position. The steppe geometer (Hematurga amitaria) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Geometridae. These moths are characterized by the distinctive "looping" locomotion of their larvae, which possess reduced numbers of prolegs compared to other caterpillar families, forcing them to move in a looping motion.

Host plants. This species is primarily found in steppe regions and dry grasslands. While it naturally feeds on various wild grasses and steppe vegetation, it can occasionally become a pest for agricultural fields located near natural habitats, especially when native flora is replaced by forage crops or cereal grains.

Biology and lifecycle. The life cycle involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult moths are typically active in the warmer months. After mating, females deposit eggs on host plants. The larvae go through several instars, feeding voraciously before descending to the soil or remaining within plant debris to pupate, which is the stage in which they often overwinter.

Nature of damage and harm. The economic damage is caused by the larval stage. Caterpillars feed on the leaf blades, often causing significant defoliation in patches. High densities of the pest can lead to reduced plant vigor, decreased photosynthetic capacity, and ultimately, lower yields in hayfields or pasture land, making it a concern for localized agricultural management.

Control measures. Managing the steppe geometer requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key methods include:

• Cultivation practices such as autumn plowing to disrupt the pupation sites in the soil.
• Maintaining field borders free of weeds that act as alternative host plants.
• Monitoring larval populations and applying registered insecticides only when economic threshold levels are reached.
• Encouraging the presence of natural predators and parasitoids that help regulate moth populations in the ecosystem.
