It is a highly migratory species known for its extensive range, often appearing in temperate regions after long-distance flights from warmer climates. In agricultural science, it is classified as a beneficial predator, though its larval activity requires management.

Crops affected: The species does not directly damage crop tissues. However, it is frequently associated with aquatic crop systems, including rice paddies and corn fields that utilize extensive irrigation networks. The presence of these dragonflies is often an indicator of the water quality and the availability of prey insects in the vicinity of the fields.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle progresses through the egg, naiad (larval), and adult stages. The larvae are aquatic and show remarkable resilience, capable of developing in temporary water bodies or stagnant irrigation ditches. Adults are strong fliers, often moving in large swarms to track suitable conditions for reproduction across continents.

Nature of damage and economic importance: No direct plant injury is caused by the vagrant emperor as it feeds on other insects. Economic impact is primarily related to the maintenance of water infrastructure. Massive populations of larvae can occasionally interfere with the flow of water in small agricultural channels, and their management is generally considered part of standard aquatic system maintenance.

Management measures: Chemical control is not recommended as these insects are primarily beneficial predators of smaller pests. Effective management relies on cultural practices:

• Routine cleaning of irrigation canals to remove debris and silt.
• Regulating water levels to discourage long-term larval development in non-essential areas.
• Promoting biodiversity to maintain natural control of insect populations.
