Systematic position: Hemichroa australis belongs to the order Hymenoptera, within the family Tenthredinidae (common sawflies). It is a specialized phytophagous insect that interacts with specific woody plant hosts throughout its development.

Host plants: This pest primarily targets species within the family Salicaceae. It is most commonly found feeding on various species of willow (Salix) and alder (Alnus). In agricultural settings, it can cause significant stress to windbreak trees and nursery stock, affecting their growth and commercial value.

Biology and lifecycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Adult females deposit eggs into incisions made in the leaf tissue. Larvae, which resemble caterpillars, feed aggressively on foliage through several instar stages. Pupation usually occurs in the soil or leaf litter, providing the insect with a protected environment during the non-active season.

Damage and harmfulness: The primary damage is caused by the larval stage. Early instars perform skeletonizing, whereas later instars consume the entire leaf lamina, often leaving only the primary veins. High infestation rates lead to severe defoliation, which causes significant physiological stress to the plant, reduces biomass accumulation, and can lead to branch dieback in extreme cases.

Control measures: A professional approach to management is essential:

• Regular visual inspections to detect early larval activity.
• Utilization of biological insecticides based on Bacillus thuringiensis for larval suppression.
