Hemimysis is a genus of small crustaceans belonging to the order Mysida and the family Mysidae. While not a conventional agricultural pest of terrestrial crops, it is recognized as a significant biological agent affecting aquaculture facilities, irrigation networks, and natural water bodies where it acts as an invasive species.
The damage caused by Hemimysis is primarily economic and systemic. It frequently invades irrigation pipes and pump intake screens, causing clogging that disrupts water flow to crops. Furthermore, in aquaculture ponds, they compete directly with juvenile fish for zooplankton resources, hindering the productivity of fish farms.
The biology of Hemimysis is characterized by its high adaptive capacity to various environmental conditions, including salinity and temperature fluctuations.
