Unlike many other bee flies that are strictly beneficial, members of this genus often act as secondary parasitoids or hyperparasitoids, which can disrupt the biological control networks established within various agricultural crops.

Taxonomically, they are identified as part of the subfamily Anthracinae. These flies are robust, often covered in dense setae, and are commonly observed hovering over soil or vegetation in agricultural fields.
