The tarsonemid mite Hemitarsonemus waitei is a tiny pest belonging to the family Tarsonemidae, order Trombidiformes. Due to its microscopic size, it often infests plants unnoticed, settling deep within the youngest foliage and developing buds where they are shielded from environmental exposure.
This mite species primarily affects berry crops, including strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries. It is known for its preference for actively growing meristematic tissues, which leads to significant structural damage to the most vital parts of the plant's development.
Its biological cycle is characterized by rapid generations, which allows populations to explode under optimal temperature and humidity conditions. Females deposit eggs on young leaves, and the nymphs begin feeding immediately upon hatching, which quickly depletes the plant's resources.
