Cyclamen mite

Phytonemus pallidus

Description

The Cyclamen mite (Phytonemus pallidus) is a microscopic pest belonging to the Tarsonemidae family of the order Acariformes. It is a highly specialized mite that thrives in humid and protected environments, making it a major challenge for both commercial strawberry growers and greenhouse nursery operators.

This pest has a wide host range, primarily attacking strawberries, but it is also notorious for causing severe damage to ornamental plants such as African violets, cyclamens, begonias, and fuchsias. In greenhouses, the mite can persist year-round due to stable temperature conditions, leading to continuous overlapping generations that are difficult to eradicate.

The biology of Phytonemus pallidus is centered on colonizing young, succulent tissues. Adult females overwinter in the crown or under leaf scales. As temperatures rise, they migrate to developing leaves and buds to lay eggs. Due to a short life cycle, which can be completed in less than two weeks, populations can explode rapidly if not monitored during the early spring growth phase.

Damage symptoms are distinct and often irreversible. Infested plants show stunted growth, leaf curling, and severe malformation. The foliage often becomes brittle, dark, and oily in appearance. In strawberries, the infestation leads to reduced berry size, poor fruit set, and overall plant decline, which significantly impacts the commercial yield and the health of the perennial planting.

Effective management strategies should focus on integrated pest control:

  • Sourcing only certified mite-free plant material for new plantings.
  • Using hot water treatment for infested runners before establishing a crop.
  • Implementing good sanitation practices by removing and burning heavily infested plant debris.
  • Applying registered miticides during early vegetative stages to suppress population growth before it peaks.
