Description

Taxonomic position. The Ethiopian thrips (Hercinothrips aethiopiae) belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. It is recognized as a persistent pest of various plants, known for its ability to adapt to diverse agricultural and indoor growing environments.

Affected crops. This species has a wide host range, attacking various ornamental plants, greenhouse vegetables, and subtropical crops. Because it is highly mobile and thrives in controlled environments, it often poses a significant threat to commercial horticulture and indoor plant collections.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg, larva, propupa, pupa, and adult stages. The insect prefers warm and dry conditions, which accelerate its development and increase reproductive rates. The pests predominantly inhabit the undersides of leaves, sheltering in dense foliage to feed and complete their metamorphosis.

Damage and economic significance. As a result of their feeding activity, the thrips pierce plant tissues and suck the cellular sap. This leads to the development of necrotic, silvery-white stippling on the leaves, combined with dark fecal spots. Severe infestations result in chlorosis, leaf deformation, reduced photosynthesis, and in extreme cases, the total death of the foliage.
