Banana thrips

Systematic position: The banana thrips (Hercinothrips bicinctus) belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. This species is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that causes substantial economic losses, particularly in tropical and subtropical agriculture where banana production is prevalent.

Affected crops: While primarily known for its impact on banana plants, this species is polyphagous. It feeds on a wide range of host plants, including various ornamental shrubs, flowering plants, and greenhouse vegetables, making it a persistent threat in both open-field conditions and controlled environments like greenhouses.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of egg, larva, prepupa, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay their eggs directly into plant tissue. The insects undergo their life cycle in environments with high humidity and moderate to warm temperatures, which allow them to maintain high population densities throughout the growing season.

Damage and pest status: Feeding occurs primarily on the undersides of leaves and on the surface of young fruits. The mechanical damage caused by rasping-sucking mouthparts results in silver-colored lesions, necrotic patches, and distorted growth. In commercial banana plantations, fruit scarring is a primary cause of downgrading for export purposes.
