Description
Systematic position. Hercinothrips dimidiatus is a member of the order Thysanoptera, belonging to the family Thripidae. This species is recognized as a significant agricultural and horticultural pest, primarily affecting plants in controlled environments where consistent temperatures facilitate its rapid development.
Susceptible crops. The pest has a broad host range, showing a preference for various ornamental plants and certain foliage crops. It is particularly problematic in greenhouses and nurseries, where it can infest a variety of species, causing significant aesthetic and physiological damage to both flowering and ornamental foliage plants.
Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle consists of egg, two larval stages, prepupa, pupa, and adult. The insect spends the majority of its life cycle on the underside of leaves. Due to its short generation time, population numbers can escalate rapidly under warm and humid conditions, which are typical for greenhouse production throughout the year.
Damage and harmfulness. Damage is caused by both adults and larvae feeding on plant tissue. They pierce the epidermis and extract cell contents, resulting in stippling, chlorotic patches, and leaf silvering. Severe infestations cause leaf necrosis, premature senescence, and stunted growth, significantly reducing the commercial value of the crop.
