Banded greenhouse thrips

Systematic position: The banded greenhouse thrips (Hercinothrips femoralis) belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. It is a highly specialized and aggressive pest predominantly found in greenhouses, conservatories, and tropical indoor environments, where it poses a constant threat to ornamental and exotic crops.

Host plants: This thrips species is a polyphagous pest with a broad host range. It frequently attacks banana plants, orchids, gardenias, anthuriums, coffee plants, and a variety of palm species. In controlled environments, it can easily infest diverse botanical collections, spreading rapidly between neighboring plants.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of egg, larval, prepupal, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs within the leaf tissue. Development is highly sensitive to environmental factors; higher temperatures and moderate humidity promote faster generation turnover. Under optimal greenhouse conditions, the entire life cycle can be completed in approximately one month.

Damage and severity: Hercinothrips femoralis feed by puncturing plant cells and extracting the sap. Infested foliage typically exhibits silvery or bronzed discolored patches, often accompanied by characteristic dark spots of excrement on the leaf undersides. Severe infestations lead to leaf wilting, deformation, stunted plant growth, and sometimes total defoliation.

Control measures: A successful integrated pest management (IPM) strategy includes:

• Regular monitoring using blue sticky traps to detect early population spikes.
• Maintaining high relative humidity to create unfavorable conditions for the thrips.
• Pruning and destroying severely infested foliage to reduce the population.
• Applying systemic insecticides such as acetamiprid or spinosad where permitted.
• Releasing biological control agents like Amblyseius mites or Orius bugs to suppress the pest population naturally.
