Description

Heterarthrus is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae. These insects are well-known leaf-mining sawflies that cause significant damage to various deciduous trees, primarily maples, by spending their larval stage feeding inside the leaf tissues.

The host plants are typically maple species, though related species may affect other hardwood trees. The adult sawfly is a small, inconspicuous insect, but the larvae are highly specialized feeders. By tunneling between the upper and lower leaf surfaces, they effectively disrupt the tree's photosynthetic capability.

The biological cycle of Heterarthrus is closely linked to the growing season of the host plant. Eggs are deposited into the leaf epidermis. Upon hatching, the larvae create mines that gradually enlarge. Depending on the species, pupation may occur either within the leaf mine itself or in the soil beneath the host tree.
