Maple leaf miner sawfly

The maple leaf miner sawfly (Heterarthrus aceris) is an insect pest classified under the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae. It is a specialized herbivore that specifically targets maple trees (genus Acer), making it a significant concern for arborists and urban forest managers.

This pest primarily attacks the leaves of the Norway maple and related species. Unlike external defoliators, the larvae of Heterarthrus aceris are leaf miners; they burrow between the upper and lower epidermis of the leaf, consuming the chlorophyll-rich parenchyma tissue. This results in the formation of blotch-like mines that eventually cause the leaf tissue to wither.

The biological cycle starts with the adult sawfly emerging in spring to deposit eggs into the soft tissues of developing maple leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin mining. Once they reach maturity, they construct a distinctive, round parchment-like cocoon within the leaf mine before pupating. This protective layer makes them resistant to many environmental stressors.

The damage caused by these insects is characterized by premature leaf senescence and shedding. Repeated infestations over several growing seasons can weaken the tree, leading to canopy thinning, stunted growth, and increased susceptibility to secondary pathogens. Large-scale outbreaks can severely diminish the aesthetic value of maple-lined streets and parks.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this sawfly:

• Sanitation measures, including the raking and destruction of infested leaf litter, significantly reduce the overwintering population.
• Application of systemic insecticides when adults are active or when young larvae begin mining.
• Encouraging natural predators and parasitoids that target the larval stages within the mines.
