Alder leaf miner

The Alder leaf miner (Latin Heterarthrus vagans) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae. This insect is a specific pest that targets trees of the genus Alnus, causing significant damage to the leaf structure by feeding internally within the foliage.

This pest is primarily found on various Alder species, including Black alder and Grey alder. The larvae are specialized leaf miners that spend their entire development stage inside the leaf, creating a protected environment that makes them difficult to target with many traditional surface-acting pesticides.

The life cycle begins with overwintering in the soil within silken cocoons. In the spring, adult sawflies emerge to mate and lay eggs directly into the leaf tissue. Depending on the local climate and temperature conditions, the species may undergo one or more generations throughout a single growing season.

Damage is characterized by blotch-shaped mines that appear on the leaf surface. Initially pale, these mines eventually turn brown as the tissue dies. Heavy infestations result in severe leaf browning, which leads to premature leaf drop, reduced vitality of the tree, and diminished aesthetic appeal in landscape settings.

Management strategies focus on breaking the pest's life cycle. Cultural practices, such as removing and destroying infested leaf litter in the fall, can help reduce the population for the following year. Furthermore, soil cultivation beneath the tree canopy is recommended to disrupt the pupation sites of the overwintering larvae.

For chemical control, applying systemic insecticides during the early larval stage is the most effective approach. Since the larvae feed internally, systemic products are absorbed by the tree and reach the pests within their mines. Monitoring the onset of the first generation in late spring is crucial for timely and successful intervention.
