Powderpost beetle

The powderpost beetle (lat. Heterobostrychus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Bostrichidae. These wood-boring insects are significant pests that infest both weakened living trees and dried lumber, furniture, and various wood products. Their ability to drill deep into hard timber causes substantial economic losses in both forestry and the woodworking industry.

This pest affects a wide range of woody plants, including various fruit trees like apples and pears, as well as valuable forest species such as oak, beech, and walnut. They are particularly destructive when infesting stored timber and manufactured wood goods. In high-density infestations, these beetles can compromise the structural integrity of the wood, leaving only a hollowed-out frame behind.

The biology of Heterobostrychus revolves around the female's habit of boring into the wood to lay eggs. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae begin to feed on the wood tissues, creating intricate tunnels throughout the material. Depending on the environmental conditions, such as humidity and temperature, the developmental cycle from egg to adult can range from a few months to a full year.

Damage symptoms are easily recognized by small, circular exit holes on the wood surface, accompanied by fine, flour-like frass (wood dust) falling from these openings. Internally, the wood is riddled with a dense network of tunnels, leading to the destruction of its mechanical properties. For living trees, this infestation results in canopy dieback and eventual plant death.

Control measures primarily involve rigorous phytosanitary inspection of imported wood and quarantine protocols to prevent the spread of the pest. Effective management includes professional fumigation of infested structures, heat treatment of lumber, and the application of residual insecticide treatments. It is recommended to promptly remove and destroy all infested material to stop the spread of the beetle population.
