Unicorn beetle

Systematic position. The unicorn beetle (Heterobostrychus unicornis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Bostrichidae (auger beetles). It is recognized as a significant technical pest of wood, causing severe degradation to stored timber and finished wooden products on an international scale.

Host plants and damage targets. This species is highly polyphagous, targeting a wide range of hardwood species and tropical timbers. It is particularly destructive to sawn lumber, furniture components, and construction wood, showing a preference for seasoned or partially seasoned wood products.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adult beetles typically bore into the wood to lay eggs. Upon hatching, larvae burrow deep into the wood, excavating long, complex tunnels. The length of the life cycle varies depending on environmental conditions, but can last several months, with the larvae spending almost their entire lifespan within the wood.

Nature of damage and economic impact. The infestation is often hidden, identified only by the fine dust or frass left behind or by small, circular exit holes made by adults. The cumulative damage leads to the internal destruction of wood structure, significant loss of structural integrity, and devaluation of timber, leading to substantial economic losses in the forestry and furniture sectors.

• Conduct mandatory heat treatment (kiln drying) of all lumber to kill all life stages.
• Implement strict phytosanitary measures for international timber trade.
• Use chemical prophylactic treatments, including insecticide dipping or pressure impregnation.
• Store timber in climate-controlled areas to reduce suitability for infestation.
• Regularly inspect warehouse stocks for signs of boring activity or fresh frass.
