Pigeonpea cyst nematode

The pigeonpea cyst nematode (Heterodera cajani) is a destructive plant-parasitic nematode within the family Heteroderidae. This pest is a significant constraint to the productivity of pulse crops globally, particularly in tropical regions where pigeonpea is a staple food and fodder source.

The primary host for this nematode is pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan), but it also parasitizes other legumes including mung bean and cowpea. Because it forms resilient cysts, the pest can persist in the soil for several years, making long-term land management and effective field sanitation difficult for producers.

Its biological life cycle involves the transformation of females into tough, brown, lemon-shaped cysts that protect eggs from environmental extremes. When favorable conditions occur, such as the planting of a host crop, the second-stage juveniles hatch from these cysts, move through the soil, and penetrate the roots to initiate the feeding process.

Symptoms of infestation are primarily underground and include stunted root systems, reduced nodulation, and chlorotic foliage. Above-ground symptoms often mimic nutrient deficiency or drought stress, which can lead to delayed detection. Ultimately, the nematode reduces plant vigor and yield, especially when combined with other soil-borne pathogens that exploit root damage.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy that prioritizes non-chemical methods. Key practices include:

• Implementing long-term crop rotation with non-host crops like cereals.
• Utilizing nematode-resistant cultivars where available.
• Applying green manure crops that naturally suppress nematode populations.
• Managing soil moisture and fertility to ensure plants can compensate for root damage.
