Description
The cabbage cyst nematode (Heterodera cruciferae) is a plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Heteroderidae. It is a highly specialized pest that primarily infects plants within the Brassicaceae family, causing significant economic losses in vegetable and oilseed production.
Host crops include various types of cabbage, radish, turnip, swede, rapeseed, and mustard. The nematode is capable of surviving for many years in the soil in a dormant state inside cysts, which are the dead bodies of females filled with eggs, protecting the population from environmental stress.
The life cycle begins when larvae hatch from the cysts in response to chemical signals released by the roots of host plants. After invading the roots, the larvae establish a feeding site, eventually leading to the development of the swollen female body, which ruptures the root epidermis to become a hard-shelled cyst.
Damage is characterized by stunted growth, chlorosis, and wilting of plants during dry weather. When roots are inspected, one can find small, spherical cysts attached to the root system. Heavy infestations prevent proper nutrient and water uptake, often resulting in deformed or unmarketable produce.
Effective control strategies require a multi-faceted approach. Key recommendations include:
