Rice cyst nematode

Heterodera elachista

Description

Systematic position: Heterodera elachista belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, order Tylenchida, and family Heteroderidae. It is a highly specialized plant-parasitic nematode known for causing significant economic losses in rice cultivation by parasitizing the root systems of cereal crops.

Host range: The primary host for this nematode species is rice (Oryza sativa). While it shows a strong preference for rice, the nematode can also complete its life cycle on certain associated wild grasses found in paddy environments, which serves as a reservoir for the pest between growing seasons.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle begins with the hatching of second-stage juveniles from eggs protected within the cyst. These juveniles locate host roots and penetrate the epidermis to feed. The sedentary females become engorged as they develop, eventually forming a tough, lemon-shaped brown cyst on the root surface, which protects the next generation of eggs from environmental stress.

Damage and pathogenicity: Infestation disrupts the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients. The physical damage to the root cortex leads to several symptomatic manifestations:

  • Stunted growth of the aerial parts.
  • Chlorosis and yellowing of the leaves.
  • Reduced tiller formation in rice plants.
  • Yield losses due to improper grain filling.

Control measures: Management of Heterodera elachista relies heavily on preventive measures. Implementing crop rotation with non-host crops is essential to reduce soil population levels. Additionally, thorough sanitation of farm machinery prevents the spread of cysts to uninfected areas. In regions with severe infestation, the use of certified resistant rice varieties is the most sustainable long-term solution.
