Description
The pea cyst nematode (Heterodera goettingiana) is a destructive plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the Heteroderidae family and the Tylenchida order. As an obligate parasite, it primarily targets leguminous crops, making it a major concern for pea growers worldwide.
This pest mainly infests cultivated peas, vetch, lentils, and bitter vetch. By invading the root tissues, the nematode creates specialized feeding sites, which severely disrupts the plant's nutrient and water uptake, leading to stunted growth, wilting, and significantly reduced yield potential.
The life cycle begins when juveniles in the soil are attracted to the roots of host plants. After penetrating the root cortex, the sedentary females develop into swollen bodies that eventually rupture the root surface. The female then forms a tough, brown cyst, which protects the eggs and can persist in the soil for many seasons until a suitable host crop is planted.
Characteristic signs of an infestation appear as patches of stunted, yellowing plants in the field. Careful examination of the root system during the growing season reveals the presence of tiny white, lemon-shaped cysts attached to the roots. Severe infestations lead to a reduced root biomass, making plants more susceptible to environmental stress.
Effective management strategy centers on preventing the buildup of nematode populations in the soil. Key agricultural practices include:
- Implementing long-term crop rotations (5–7 years) without host legumes.
- Using tolerant or resistant pea varieties where available.
- Controlling alternative wild legume weed hosts that sustain nematode populations.
- Ensuring machinery is cleaned between fields to prevent the spread of infested soil.
