Coastal cyst nematode
Heterodera litoralis
Description
Systematic position. The coastal cyst nematode (Heterodera litoralis) belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, order Tylenchida, and family Heteroderidae. It is a highly specialized cyst-forming parasite that lives within the soil environment and plant root systems.
Host plants. This nematode species primarily infects members of the Caryophyllaceae family, particularly various species of sandwort (Arenaria) and other coastal flora. Although its host range is specialized, it poses a significant threat to natural ecosystems and ornamental plants inhabiting specific coastal soil conditions.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of an egg stage, four larval stages, and an adult stage. Second-stage juveniles penetrate the roots, where they settle and develop. As the females mature, they swell into a lemon-like shape, rupturing the root tissue while remaining attached. Upon the female's death, her cuticle hardens into a protective cyst, which contains hundreds of eggs capable of surviving in the soil for several years.
Damage patterns and pathogenicity. Infection leads to severe deformation of the root system. This impairment hinders the uptake of water and essential nutrients, manifesting as leaf chlorosis, stunted growth, reduced flowering capacity, and premature wilting. Characteristic swellings or galls often appear on the roots due to the accumulation of female nematodes.
Management strategies. Controlling this pest is challenging due to the extreme durability of the protective cysts against conventional pesticides. Effective management involves strict phytosanitary measures, preventing the movement of infested soil, and implementing crop rotation. The use of trap crops that trigger egg hatching without allowing the parasite to complete its life cycle, combined with the application of nematophagous fungi, represents the most sustainable approach to long-term control.
