Description
Systematic position. The rice cyst nematode (Heterodera oryzicola) belongs to the order Tylenchida and the family Heteroderidae. It is a highly specialized plant parasite that poses a significant threat to global rice production, particularly in regions where intensive irrigation practices promote the survival and spread of soil-borne pathogens.
Host range. The primary host for this pest is cultivated rice (Oryza sativa). While it is highly adapted to rice, the nematode can also infest certain graminaceous weeds, which can act as alternative hosts, ensuring the pathogen's persistence in the field even during rotation periods when rice is not grown.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg stage, four larval stages, and the adult stage. Second-stage juveniles emerge from cysts in the soil and invade the rice roots. As the females mature, their bodies swell, and they eventually die, their cuticle hardening to form a protective brown cyst that contains hundreds of eggs, capable of surviving for years in the soil.
Nature of damage and pathogenicity. Feeding by the nematodes severely damages the root system, preventing the uptake of water and essential nutrients. Above-ground symptoms include yellowing, stunting, reduced tillering, and poor grain filling. In cases of severe infestation, the plants may appear chlorotic and show early senescence, significantly reducing yield and grain quality.
Management measures. Controlling Heterodera oryzicola requires a combination of strategies due to the resilience of the cyst stage:
- Crop rotation with non-host plants to reduce nematode population density in the soil.
- Utilization of resistant rice cultivars developed through breeding programs.
- Implementation of strict phytosanitary measures for seed and machinery movement.
- Maintaining soil fertility and optimal irrigation to enhance the tolerance of rice plants.
